Biographies

I've created a database to help teens locate biographies that they have to read for school or wish to read for pleasure. Go directly to the Biography List or find it on Infosoup on the teen page. Email me with questions. Peg

Teen Lit Day

To celebrate Teen Lit Day (Thursday, April 19th)I am visiting several Waupaca Middle School and High School classes. In addition I will be setting up a table at the Waupaca High School during the lunch hour. Make sure you stop by and say "Hi." I'll have books to check out, and I can tell you the status of your library card. If your card has expired, I'll issue you an new one. I'll be rewarding students that take the time to talk to me, so tell all your friends!

Side Effects

I recently finished the book, Side Effects by Amy Goldman Koss. the main character, Izzy, is diagnosed with lymphoma. Her mother falls apart, her best friend freaks out and kids she doesn't even know are crying. Only her little brother treats her like he used to. Izzy goes through biopsies, chemo and other atrocities, but she manages not to lose herself along with her hair. This is not one of those horrible "Lurlene-type" novels where your favorite character dies at the end! Check it out in Infosoup!

Game Day

Today we had Early Dismissal from school. We had a lot of activity in the Best Cellar. Teens dropped by to play DDR, Apples to Apples and a new game, Man Bites Dog. I ordered pizza and it was consumed within minutes. I'm so glad we have our new, expanded space to accommodate all the teens who want to hang out!

Starting to think about Summer Reading Program

I've been thinking that the popularity of Guitar Hero merits program time this sumer. Here's the schedule I'm thinking about.
Monday - PS2 Tourneys
1-3 DDR
3-5 Guitar Hero
Tuesday - Anime Club (Let's try to revive the interest!)
Wednesday - Magic Card Tourney
Thursday - Teen DIY (Previously Crafts)
Friday - Teen Movies
Let me know what you think. Your input is very important to me!

Readers' Theater Rehearsal

Don't forget Readers' Theater Rehearsal is Wednesday at 4:00 pm. We will be working out the parts and practicing. Bring your books!

Demco Gift Certificate

Slag members looked at the Demco catalog a the Committee Meeting. They found two items that they felt would be fabulous in the Best Cellar!

The first one is an LED Programmable Message Sign.
They also liked the Demco Display Pedestals
Go to Demco.com and copy and paste the name of the item into the search box. Take a look and let me know what you think.

Slag Committee Meeting

We had a Slag Committee Meeting yesterday and this is what we (Kokie, Alex, Val, Adam, Jarad and Peg) talked about:
1. Early Dismissal is next Thursday, April 12th. We decided to keep it easy with a game day, one craft and pizza. If people are interested we can have a DDR or Guitar hero Tournament. Peg can make prizes available for winners.
2. We logged onto the Slag Librarything.com account and played with adding some books. you too can add books to the Librarything. See Peg or Teen Staff for details.
3. Peg has started a Slag book on BookBlurb.com. This is a site that allows you to publish your own books. She has the beginnings of a book about Slag. She will be asking for help as she gets further along.
4. New magazine - Peg is considering the purchase of Sweet16. It's a kinder, gentler version of Seventeen Magazine. Preview it at www.sweet16mag.com
5. We can apply for the YALSA excellence awards. We probably qualify for the "Enhancing Teen Spaces" award and Peg may also apply for the community connections award for the Library Books for Lunch Program she has in the Waupaca Middle School.
6. I know! We really talked about a lot! Slag officers (Kokie, Matt, Alex and Val) will be going to Eau Claire with Peg to present a program on teen library programs on May 3rd. It's the first Thursday of the month, Slag Meeting Day! So we rescheduled our meeting to be on Tuesday, May 1. Same time, same place, different day! Pizza & Pages will also be on May 1.
7. Kokie was emphatic that we need to get everyone's email address so we can keep everyone informed of Slag activities.
8. We talked about the website but while we purchased a domain name, we don't have a server to put up the site - one of the reasons for this blog.

Comments please!

Alright let's give this a try!

Hi everyone,
I'm new to this blogging thing so it may be glaringly obvious that I don't know what I'm doing. I understand the idea behind a blog, have feeds to several and even post to more than one, but this is my first time as creator. I guess I'm just asking you to give me a break.

The purpose of this blog is to keep Slag (Student Library Advisory Group) teens aware of what's happening with the group, talk about "Whatzup" at the Waupaca Library and provide a forum for my many ramblings on what I'm reading. Over and out! Peg
